Richmond CPAP Users Enjoy A.W.A.K.E. Meeting

ASAA WebsiteLast night, central Virginia CPAP users were delighted with an A.W.A.K.E. meeting sponsored by the local ASAA (American Sleep Apnea Association) coordinator, Debbie Shirley, and by TheCPAPPeople.com.  Representatives from TheCPAPPeople.com, Philips Respironics, Fisher & Paykel, and ResMed were on hand to answer customer questions and provide product information for new and existing patients.

Dr. Gerard Santos, a Richmond-based board certified sleep doctor, presented the keynote address.  Dr. Santos spoke of the importance of general sleep hygiene, sleep patterns, sleep disordered breathing including Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), and treatments for OSA such as CPAP.  Dr. Santos also spoke about the importance of general healthy living and healthy lifestyles when pertaining to sleep.

A second Q&A was held with a local patient who has only been using CPAP therapy for 3 months, but was also a recent customer of TheCPAPPeople.com.  The patient worked with Anna Rodriguez, the clinical director of TheCPAPPeople.com, during his purchase to make sure he had the CPAP machine and CPAP mask he needed for success.  He was very impressed with the service and personal touch and shared his experiences as a new patient with the group.  The group was delighted to hear his experience and offered encouragement for continued success.

Attendees enjoyed the conversation, asked many questions, ate delicious food, and had the chance to touch and experience various CPAP products from major manufacturers.   One attendee commented,

"This is really great.  I had the chance to speak with a sleep doctor, for free, and he answered my questions and talked to me for a long time.  That's unusual for any doctor these days. It was great to hear other people's experiences too.  It's nice to know I am not alone."

From the ASAA Website -- A.W.A.K.E. stands for Alert, Well, And Keeping Energetic. Its education and support groups are available in nearly every state, helping people face to face and free of charge. A.W.A.K.E. gives people with sleep apnea the tools to manage their own health care successfully. Our searchable A.W.A.K.E. database can help you find a group near you.

The Richmond support group will hold A.W.A.K.E. meetings every quarter.  We hope to use the same location of the Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital auditorium that was gratiously provided to us.  Future meetings will be announced on this blog and on our facebook page.  For an email newsletter and reminder, please sign up on our website at TheCPAPPeople.com.

The next Richmond A.W.A.K.E. meeting will be held in the Spring of 2012.  Stay tuned for more information.
